Reasons to seek help
A graphotherapy consultation is indicated when one or more of the following difficulties are present:
-
The writing is slow, sloppy, even illegible,
-
Pain is experienced in the fingers, hand, arm or shoulder,
-
Any writing activity is complicated by reluctance or refusal to write
-
A disabling condition makes the act of writing difficult.
It is important to understand the origin of these difficulties, reassured by the knowledge that solutions exist.

Assessment
The first step in the process is to conduct an assessment. The aim of this assessment is to evaluate the person's handwriting difficulties, enabling a possible diagnosis of dysgraphia.
The person performs tests to evaluate fine motor and graphic motor skills. A handwriting analysis is also conducted, however for younger children who do not yet write, the assessment is based solely on the fine motor and graphic motor skills
Following on from the assessment an appraisal is furnished which proposes appropriate solutions to resolve the issues identified (posture improvement, choice and handling of the pen or pencil, rehabilitation sessions).
The results and proposals will be provided in a comprehensive oral and written report.
Duration for tests: about 45 m.
Rehabilitation
If the assessment concludes that rehabilitation would be beneficial, a personalized rehabilitation plan is proposed, which considers the needs, difficulties and age of the person.
Weekly 30 to 45-minutes rehabilitation sessions are scheduled. Work is conducted on fine motor skills, graphomotricity and writing, as required. For the youngest, games and drawing are used to make this learning experience as enjoyable as possible. At home devoting 2 to 5 minutes daily to a proposed activity which complements the work done during the session will help reinforce the effects of the rehabilitation. These activities will be fully explained by the graphotherapist.
The number of sessions varies as it depends on the needs and requirements of the individual. However, the average course is approximately twelve sessions.
